Dick Barrett, Pastor

Dick came to Oak Grove to fill the Associate Pastor position in December 2002, feeling called to pastoral ministry after completing a 20-year career with the New York State Police. He assumed the role of Lead Pastor in Sept. 2006. He and his wife Mary moved from Western New York to West Liberty with their two daughters, Emma (Bryant) Newman and Erin (Brad) Stengel. Dick has two sons, Tim (Jennifer) & Joe, who reside in New York.  They also have two grandchildren.  Dick was raised in the Roman Catholic faith but drifted from the church for several years in his early adult life. After experiencing a failed marriage and the unexpected death of his father, he encountered a “born-again” experience, being baptized as an adult and joining the Mennonite church in 1999. Dick’s spiritual pilgrimage has been both exciting and a winding road. Through the grace of God he has used the experiences of his life, from his being raised in the Catholic church, through his years away from the church, and to the Mennonite church with its emphasis on discipleship and trying to follow Jesus in every area of our lives. Pastor Dick has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany and a master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, New York and graduate course work from Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  He is also certified as a spiritual director.
